On May 27th, WILHK celebrated its fourth anniversary by hosting a fireside chat with Emily Steel, a Pulitzer Prize winning business journalist with the New York Times. The event was held at Mercedes Me in Central, Hong Kong, and was generously sponsored by Ropes & Gray. The conversation with Emily, moderated by WILHK committee member, Yea Ji Sohn, covered a wide range of topics - from Emily's award-winning coverage of Bill O'Reilly's sexual harassment and misconduct while employed at Fox News, to her personal values and principles which drive her career, as well as her most recent work covering stories in the APAC region. The event was attended by over 125 members and guests.

Women in Law Hong Kong is pleased to support #AmChamHK’s Women of Influence Awards on November 12, 2019. Their theme this year is "Insights from the Edge: Pushing Boundaries and Unconventional Thinking,” focusing on stories of perseverance, risk- taking and leadership from outside the confines of the corporate world.

Along with the phenomenal lineup of speakers, the heart of the event celebrates the announcement of the Women of Influence Awards, with nine award categories that recognize seven high-achieving women, one man who has demonstrated support for the advancement of women and one outstanding company for women.

It's a day to celebrate progress, look toward the future, to inspire, and to explore what it means to have an impact.

Launch of WILHK’s ground-breaking report: making the case for flexible and agile working in Hong Kong’s legal industry

19 June 2019

At an event at Refinitiv attended by 127 from across the industry, WILHK was proud to launch its new report. WILHK's survey, a first for Hong Kong, canvassed the views of nearly 400 people across the profession. We were excited to share our survey findings and report with delegates and highlight what is holding Hong Kong back from alternative working models.

Stephanie Sheng, WILHK co-chair, opened the event and thanked the raft of firms and organisations supporting the event and report: Allen & Overy, Appleby Global, Conventus Law, the Department of Justice, Eversheds Sutherland, the Equal Opportunities Commission, Eureka Consulting Group, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith Freehills, Linklaters, Refinitiv, Relativity and The Women's Foundation.

Fiona Nott, CEO of The Women’s Foundation and WILHK advisory board member, delivered opening remarks, drawing on complementary TWF research and statistics.

Anita Phillips, WILHK co-chair, presented the key outputs of the survey and report, using interactive online polling to gauge audience views.

Delegates then broke into small groups to discuss particular topics including drivers and motivations, the business case, societal issues impacting uptake, and the need for other gender-driven reforms such as share parental leave policies.

After a plenary roundup, Ferrick Chu, director of policy, research and training at the Equal Opportunities Commission, delivered closing remarks, reminding us of the laws available to fight gender-driven discrimination in this area.

Delegates stayed on for further discussion and drinks and canapes after the seminar.

Feedback on the report and event has been extremely positive. If you would like to know more, or to run a focus session with WILHK, please contact info@wilhk.com.
